Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg started work on Martin Guerre in 1991. After a long development period it's World Premiere took place at the Prince Edward Theatre, London on 10 July 1996. It had a company of 35 and a 27 piece orchestra.

Martin Guerre closed for several days in early November 1996 and underwent a large revision. It re-opened to critical acclaim on 11 November 1996. It went on to win the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and played for 700 performances before closing on 28 February 1998.

On 28 November 1998 a further revised Martin Guerre, now under the direction of Conall Morrison, and with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Stephen Clark, embarked on a United Kingdom National Tour. It had a company of 24 with a 10 piece orchestra. The show opened at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds and played there until 13 February 1999. It then toured to the following locations:

Following another revision, Martin Guerre embarked on a tour of the United States of America. It had a company of 27. The show opened at the Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis on 29 September 1999 and played there until 7 November 1999. It then toured to the following locations:
