BIOGRAPHY:
Roger Lemke's career spans music theatre, opera, film and
concert performance. His first professional engagements were
as an actor in television, following which he pursued a career
in music and the stage. Roger made his operatic debut in 1985
with Victoria State Opera as Schaunard in La Boheme,
and with Opera Australia (formerly The Australian Opera) as
Schaunard in 1986. He has since appeared with all the Australian
opera companies, as well as in New Zealand in a diverse range
of roles which include Papageno in The Magic Flute,
Taddeo in The Italian Girl in Algiers, Giuseppe in
The Gondoliers, Count Boni in The Gipsy Princess,
two seasons as Marcello in the highly acclaimed Baz Luhrmann
production of La Boheme (televised throughout the USA,
the UK and Europe), the Engineer in the world premiere of
The Eighth Wonder by Alan John, Lescaut in Manon
Lescaut, the Count and Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro,
Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Dr. Falke in Die
Fledermaus, Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Sharpless
in the Ken Russell production of Madam Butterfly, Harlequin
in Ariadne auf Naxos, Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale,
Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Anckarstroem in A Masked
Ball, Valentin in the acclaimed lan Judge production of
Faust, Elviro in Xerxes and Marcello in The
Puccini Spectacular. In addition to his opera engagements,
Roger is seen regularly in concert at Carols in the Domain
and Carols by Candlelight, both televised nationally, and
with the Australian Pops Orchestra. Other concert appearances
have included performances for the ABC's Adelaide and Tasmanian
Symphony Orchestras, as well as numerous festival performances
including Mangus in The Knot Garden (Melbourne), and
Maximilian in Bernstein's Candide (Brisbane Biennial).
He received a Green Room Award in 1990. In musical theatre,
Roger has performed the roles of Old Deuteronomy in Cats,
and Javert in the recent Melbourne season of Les Miserables.
He appears in the ABC videos La Boheme, The Gondoliers
and The Gipsy Princess, and on the highlights CD
of La Boheme on ABC Classics. He recently made his
big screen debut in The Wiggles Movie.
